UK: Honda plant to build new Civic and CR-V

8.01.2011

Honda has confirmed that both the new Civic hatchback for Europe and the next generation CR-V will be built at its Honda of the UK Manufacturing (HUM) facility in Swindon, England.

The automaker also said weekly production will return to normal levels in early September after parts supply interruption following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan last March.

The new Civic - designed for and tested on European roads - will be the ninth generation of the popular hatchback. The first Civic - a much smaller car - went on sale in 1972.

Production of what is today a C-segment family car will start later in the year at HUM, ahead of sales starting in early 2012.

"The introduction of the new model into production remained on plan during the recent parts supply interruption," HUM said.

Mark Trowbridge, director of quality and new model at Swindon, said: "The next six months will be busy as we ramp up to full production following the training and trial builds of the new car.

As with the outgoing model, Swindon will be the only plant producing the hatchback version, Trowbridge added.

The new CR-V will go on sale in Europe from autumn 2012.
