A car repair does not need to be done because you drove until the vehicle will not run any longer. There are times when you will just want to have routine work done or are doing preventative maintenance so you can keep yourself on the road. You need to make sure that you can find someone who you can trust and will work to help you to get the things taken care of and in good working order before they break. Yes, it may still be running, but if when you go in for an oil change it is noticed that something else needs replaced it may be good to get it done as opposed to waiting until it completely breaks.

When you go in for your oil change, it will not hurt to ask if you will need any other type of car repair done in the future. Have them do a visual inspection of your vehicle to determine if you will need anything else done or if they notice anything that may need more attention than normal. This could mean anything from needing new brake pads to having your transmission flushed. Most of these things can be noticed when they take the time to top everything off and have your vehicle in the air. In most cases, these professionals are trained to look for the different aspects and possibilities as opposed to only putting in clean oil to get you back on the road.

You need to make sure that you are using someone you know you can trust. You do not want the mechanic doing your car repair to be looking to take advantage of you. They need to be someone that will be able to give you the best chance at getting the right work done and for the right price.

This is why you need to make sure you know what it is you will be getting and what type of work will be done. Know your vehicle so when the time comes you can ask the right questions. You should know what type of car repair is typical, what usually goes wrong and how different types of problems are related. This way you will be able to properly judge whether the work you are getting done is appropriate.

Auto Repair & Maintenance - Don't Overdo It

You want to do just the right amount of auto repair. Doing too little will end up in a broken down vehicle or hefty auto repair bills. Doing too much is a waste of time and money. You want to do want you need to do and no more. We know you love your car, but tossing more money at it than it needs won't do anyone any good, except perhaps the repair tech or gas station owner. Here are some ways some car owners pamper their autos a bit too much:

- Filling it up with the priciest fuel: When a driver fills up at the gas station, there are several grades of fuel and the costs vary. Unless the manufacturer has recommended a premium grade of gasoline, don't use it. If your sedan, truck or SUV will happily take you from Point A to Point B with the less expensive option, why would you toss your cash down the drain?

- Changing your oil too often: In the olden days, all car owners were taught to change their oil every 3,000 miles. Now that cars have been redesigned, this is no longer necessary. A driver should look at his or her owners' manual to see how often to change it for his or her specific vehicle but currently time frames range from 5,000 to 7,000 miles before oil has to be replaced.

- Buying the priciest tires in the showroom: The salesperson will try to talk a person into the most expensive tires in the room. He or she will show how much more traction they have and discuss all the racecar drivers who have them on their cars. These may be appropriate for that competitive action, but not for a soccer mom on her minivan. Get real.

- Upgrading mapping capabilities in a brand new car: All those fancy mapping gadgets may seem cool when you're buying a new vehicle but they cost a lot. Carrying an old-fashioned paper map with you is one option with a fraction of the moolah outlay. Cell phones with internet capability have Google map built right in.

- Always taking it to the dealer for service: While it's important to have the regularly scheduled maintenance tasks performed, they don't all have to be done at the car dealer. Sure, the dealer would like you to think that getting an oil change elsewhere will void your warranty but that's not true. As long as it's done and the mechanic signs off on it, you're covered.

- Buying an extended warranty: New vehicles come with a warranty that covers most everything for a certain number of miles or period of time. Getting one for another five or ten years would be smart if it was free or extremely inexpensive but adding the cost to your payment will be pricey over time, especially with all that interest.

Yes, you love your automobile. Paying for the appropriate amount of auto repair and maintenance is smart. Overdoing it is a waste of time and money.
