Car Dealerships Are Benefiting From Poor Public Transport Alternatives

12.12.2011

Buying a car is an exciting experience. It does not matter if you are a student and walking from one second-hand car dealership to the next, looking for that one of a kind typical student vehicle to compliment your unique style and attitude or if you are a successful businessman only visiting the car dealerships with the most expensive luxury vehicles, it remains an exciting purchase.

The traffic on our roads is increasing on a daily basis. In most families both mom and dad are now working to earn a living, and since the places of work are often far apart, there are now two cars on the road for each family, where the norm was one breadwinner and therefore one vehicle a couple of years ago. Even some high school students now have their own motorcycles or entry-level vehicles - with both mom and dad working they still need to find a way to get to school and back and to after-school activities etc. Add to that the number of college and university students on the roads, mom's dropping their kids of at school and large delivery trucks transporting goods and food from warehouses to shops and you have traffic volumes to take note of...

Government is trying their best to maintain the highways and build new roads to cater for this increasing demand while car dealerships are being built on busy street corners faster than you can say "please decrease the toll fees." While there are certain things that can be done to limit the number of vehicles on the roads, these plans and actions are unfortunately not practical for all. Let's use the Gautrain in South Africa as an example. This new addition to Gauteng is indeed a practical wonder but only for some. While the train services a couple of the main routes and feeder buses transport travellers from stations to nearby offices and restaurants, the service is still very limited to people working and travelling to outlying areas.

Another example in South Africa was the Government's idea to introduce lanes on the highway especially for vehicles with two or more people. The idea behind this was to encourage people to form lift clubs so that they can make use of these special lanes, but once again, this is just not practical for all. Can you imagine two sales reps having to share a car? How on earth will they be able to attend their meetings? Noble concept, but no cigar...

Some countries are more fortunate with brilliant public transport infrastructures - the situation is then off course completely different and the traffic volumes noticeably lower. The reality is that with a lack of safe and efficient public transport, there is simply no other option - you have to get in your vehicle, by yourself, and travel to wherever you need to be. And for as long as that is the case, car dealerships countrywide will be smiling from ear to ear while selling the one luxury vehicle after the next.
