Green Car Awards

12.11.2011

When you talk environmental and green issues you probably don't think about cars in a positive light as they are traditionally seen as the cause of many of our current environmental problems. But cars are increasingly becoming greener and less polluting which means that awarding green awards for motor vehicles is becoming more common.

The Skoda Yeti, the compact SUV from the company based in the Czech Republic but owned by German Volkswagen is one car which has won several awards. The latest award they've won is that of the International Green Apple Environment Award. The organisation behind this environmental award is an independent group dedicated to promoting the positive side of environmental behaviour. This time around this group decided to honour new environmentally friendly cars and the Skoda Yeti was the winner of the 'smaller SUV and 4x4' category.

The new Yeti E 2.0-litre TDI has a combined fuel economy of 52.3mpg and only emits 140g/km of CO2 which are excellent figures for a family friendly car like this which offers plenty of space for the entire family and their luggage. Price wise the Skoda Yeti starts at 14,800 and places like Skoda Hampshire will most certainly have this new Skoda available on their forecourts.

Other cars getting green awards in the same SUV category is the Peugeot 3008 2.0 HDi Hybrid4 which is the world's first diesel hybrid with a diesel engine driving the front wheels and an electric motor powering the rear wheels. This combination keeps CO2 emissions as low as 99g/km. In addition to this the car delivers around 74mpg which is why online car guide WhatCar? awarded it the Green Award for 2011 in the SUV category ahead of the Skoda Yeti 1.6 TDI Greenline II and the BMW X3 xDrive.

A third green award handed out is the Next Green Car Award which is handed out in 8 different vehicle classes. They category winners are all selected for their environmental green car rating in addition to innovation, value for money, driving experience and design.

Their winner in the MPV class was the new Renault Scenic 1.6-litre dCi start-stop with a fuel economy of 62.8 mpg and CO2 emissions of 115g/km and in the Crossover category the overall winner has yet to be announced but the Peugeot 3008 mentioned above is amongst the contenders.

Because manufacturers are focusing more and more of their efforts on developing cleaner technology and governments and consumers around the globe want to clean up their act, we will probably see more green car awards emerging in years to come to reflect this new trend.
